Tumblr is an online social tool and blogging site. It combines a lot of features such as mini-blogging, picture and video sharing, and social media into one website.

There are many different ways to use tumblr. For educators, there are a lot of great, free resources for planning lessons, units, and field trips.
For students, this is a great way to publish their own work, find book reviews and current events, and collaborate in an online environment.

To use tumblr:
  1. Create an account. Follow the easy steps (provide email address, desired tumblr url, password, and verify your age). It helps to categorize your blog, for example, I put my blog in the "education" category.
  2. Find other tumblrs/blogs to follow. Tumblr will suggest some for you to follow and you can find more by clicking the link in the right-hand sidebar that says "Find blogs."
  3. View your dashboard. (click the house shaped button). Once you follow a tumblr, all of their posts show up on your dashboard for you to view in one easy location. If you wish to follow a new tumblr, click the follow button on their tumblr page. If you want to unfollow someone (their posts will no longer appear on your dash), simply click the unfollow button on their tumblr page or hover your mouse over the script "i" in their icon on your dashboard, and click unfollow.
  4. You can also follow a certain topic by searching and tracking tags. To search for a tag, type in a keyword into the search bar at the top of the tumblr page. For example, "The Pigman." Once the results come up, you may decide you want to track the Pigman tag in case something new comes up. In the right-hand column, there will be a box with all your tracked tags. Here "the pigman" tag will show up with the word track next to it. Click this. Now on your dashboard, you will always have a list of your tracked tags. If there is a new post made in any of your tracked tags, a number will pop up next to the tag - example, "the pigman 2."
  5. To post your own content, select one of the buttons on the top of your dashboard that corresponds to what you would like to post (text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio, or video). You can tag your post with different hashtags so that other people can easily find your posts. You can also reblog other people's posts by clicking the reblog button.

Note: This video is older and tumblr routinely changes it's functionality. Most of the steps and methods here are similar to what you can do now.
